Get to know Georgia

Georgia (native name: Sakartvelo) is one of the most ancient countries in the world. The earliest Georgian state, Colchis, was formed in the 13th century BC, followed by Diauehi in the 12th century BC and Iberia in the 5th century BC.

Located in the Caucasus region at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, Georgia occupies a strategically important position between continents.

Geography

Georgia is bordered: to the west by the Black Sea, to the south by Turkey and Armenia, to the east by Azerbaijan, and to the north by Russia. The country is largely mountainous. The Greater Caucasus stretches along the entire northern border with Russia.

On the eastern coast of the Black Sea lies the fertile Colchis Lowland, historically associated with the legend of Medea and the Golden Fleece — the destination of the Argonauts in Greek mythology.

Eastern Georgia also features semi-desert landscapes. The country is known for its untouched wilderness, diverse ecosystems, dense forests, mineral waters, waterfalls, caves, and remarkable natural monuments.

Major Cities

The capital and largest city is Tbilisi.

History & Culture

Due to its strategic location where Europe meets Asia, Georgia has historically attracted numerous empires and invaders. From the 1st century BC to the 18th century AD, Greeks, Romans, Persians, Arabs, Mongols, Ottomans, and Russians attempted to dominate the region. Despite periods of occupation and influence, Georgia preserved its identity, language, and culture.

This complex and layered history has created a rich cultural heritage — from ancient cave cities and medieval monasteries to grand cathedrals and distinctive architecture. Georgia is also world-renowned for its hospitality, traditional music and dance, and exceptionally delicious cuisine and wine. It is widely regarded as one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world.
